I'd been covering the growth of tax protesters and white-race isolationists in western Montana since summer of 1994 when the attorneys general of the Pacific Northwest gathered to discuss the threat of the growing movement. Long before the rest of the U.S. was aware of thes "wing nuts," Montanans were dealing with their protests. What made these characters more dangerous than other off-the-grid isolationists is that these folks were heavily armed.

In early February of 1995, the time was right for a profile of one of the most vocal protesters. Cal Greenup, who illegally caught and raised elk on his fenced property, was willing to sit down and talk. At a dining room table laden with Bibles, mail-order tax protest tracts, and reams of court documents, Greenup told his story. Later, he took the photographer and I outside to watch his half-wild elk nuzzle him.
