Multimedia pioneers: Talk shows on the Net? Why not? A few people are pioneering the medium and still trying to find the formula that works (and maybe the answer is no formula at all).

Hackers versus crackers: Yes, we know the difference. But many don't, and the hackers have started worry about their image.

Creativity counts: You've got to adapt in this changing world, and that's what Polhemus Inc. has done, changing from a company that provided the military with a motion-tracking device, to supplier of special effects for Hollywood.

AOL rising: America Online reported a fourth quarter loss of 12 cents per share. But its operating performance cheered Wall Street.

Confirmation: As reported earlier, Apple Computer has rehired its old advertising agency, it announced formally today.

Warnings: The Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition says, in a self-published book, that the computer industry pollutes the groundwater in the Southwest U.S. and guzzles water. The industry denies the allegations.

Tax relief: Massachusetts declared a 16-month moratorium on its ISP sales tax.

Civil liberties: The American Civil Liberties Union warns that Net ratings and filters lead to censorship, in a white paper sent to government leaders.

Wired women: Online community isn't just about technical issues or rants over competing platforms. It can be for and about mothers, for instance. (And we know you're out there.)

Read all about it: Microsoft's FrontPage98, a web design and development tool, is coming Monday in a beta version that will be good until the end of this calendar year.

Informix, which makes tools and software for database management, reported a hefty loss in its second quarter of 79 cents per share. It's also working on restating its 1996 results because of errors in its revenue report.

Yahoo cuts costs: Yahoo, which had an agreement to pay Netscape $10 million this year for hosting a navigation site on the browser company's web page, has halved its payment because of the delayed release of Netscape's Communicator and higher-than-expected startup costs.

A fool and his money are soon parted: Thinking of changing stock brokers? Got some good recommendations from friends? You'll want to investigate brokers before you put your trust and money in their pockets. The National Association of Securities Regulation, which has responded to inquiries by phone and e-mail in the past, will now post brokers' professional histories on a web page.

WebTV has found some new allies in CitySearch and Sidewalk.

Mine, all mine: In response to the Microsoft-Apple alliance, Sun Microsystems says both companies are prohibited from selling their own Java Virtual Machines. Netscape, however, appears unperturbed about the alliance.

If you ask me, our coverage of Apple Computer over the past year or so is the best out there; but if you want to see what the wire services are sending around, browse through our breaking news page, where you'll find several pieces from the past 24 hours or so.
