Acquisition OK'd: The Korean government has given Samsung the needed approvals for its purchase of AST Research Inc., the computer maker.

Advertisers pay you: If you're online anyway, a small Silicon Valley startup want to pay you for your time. There's a catch, of course; you'd be paid to read ads and commercial offers, although you get to say what your interests are.

Web ad revenues up: Advertisers are starting to believe in the web as a place to reach customers. Advertising revenue on the World Wide Web reached $217.3 million through the first six months of 1997, according to Cowles/Simba Information, more than triple the revenue during the same period in 1996.

Powerful chips: Motorola and IBM introduce three new PowerPC chips, one with a clock speed as high as 350 MHz.

Everything old is new again: Chiat/Day gets the Apple advertising account back.

Code name No More Games: Tracking down and removing all those computer games on government hard drives might be a job for the stealth forces; and it might just be more trouble and expense than it's worth, industry observers note.

Speaking of stalking: Parents who want to see what Junior's up to on the Internet now have some software that will peek over a kid's shoulder, recording sites visited and how long was spent at each site.

Now it's only how much? Apple's most expensive laptop, the Powerbook 3400 is $500 cheaper today. There's a discount on memory, too. (It will still cost you around $4,000 to $5,500 for the laptop.)

Go ahead, make it crash: Those of you who like to live on the edge: Microsoft has posted beta 2 of Win98 on its developers' site.

Thanks, shareware creators: Let's say a word in honor of shareware; and isn't it time you sent in that $10 or $20 to those creative workers who came up with the apps you rely upon?

Future's so bright, they're blinded: What's up at Wired? Its future has hit a speed bump, the New York Times says (Registration required).

Push it over: If push is the next big thing, why are so many push vendors failing? They're not paying attention to the customers, ZDNet columnist Jesse Berst believes.

No permanent rivals: Ziff Davis and International Data Group are merging their Mac publications; MacUser and Macworld will merge.

Be on all the hardware you can be: Be Inc. demonstrated its OS on an Intel-based PC today; until now, the Be has run only on Mac hardware.

Cheaper chips: Cyrix dropped its chip prices just a few days after its merger with National Semiconductor was announced.

Is there a plea bargain here? System administrators around the Net began issuing a "usenet death penalty" against UUNet for its alleged failure to curb spam streaming from its dial up accounts.

Navigate the future: Should Netscape's Navigator find its own way on the web? Netscape is thinking about separating it from the Communicator suite, at the strong requests of users and partners.

Sweet suites: Business software suites are a very big business, but the numbers don't add up.

E-mail generated by web sites is a big task to handle, web masters are learning; maybe they should take a lesson from the Xerox web master who has figured out how to handle it all. (And of course, we always appreciate readers' thoughts and comments here at the GMSV Morning report).
