Chipping away at Intel: How serious is the challenge to Intel from AMD and Cyrix? It's unlikely Intel will be replaced anytime soon, but it's not so unlikely that other chip makers can take away market share.

Selling your soul: If you develop an idea on company time, most employees acknowledge that the company owns the idea. But now, some firms are demanding ownership of all your thoughts; a lawsuit in Texas is likely to set a precedent on this explosive train of thought.

On the other hand... In the past six months, Congress has submitted 30 bills to regulate the Net despite some sentiment to let it develop free and unfettered.

Arcade games in Windows: That's the hope of a Microsoft evangelist who sees a brand new market ripe for the picking.

Compaq's not so compact: Compaq looks to Europe for some big growth opportunities. The PC maker is also poised to lower its corporate PC prices Thursday.

DVD and Goliaths: Warner says it has has sold one million DVDs in the first three months they've been on sale, so both it and MGM plan a big DVD push this fall.

Net gains: NetManage is going to acquire NetSoft for $26 million cash.

The cubicle culture: What? There's culture in cubicles? Where? Here are a package of stories examining the modern American worklife, whether you're cube-bound or in telecommuting heaven.

Boom city: Seattle is experiencing a tech-fueled boom right now. As happy as the boosters sound, remember that there's always a yin to the yang (or is it the other way around?).

Janus-faced Java outlook: Microsoft likes and dislikes Java's write-once, run-anywhere philosophy. The question is whether Microsoft dislikes it enough to dice it up.

Name game: Is your favorite name, elvis.com, already assigned? How about trying the good ol' .us domain. It's underused, perhaps because you end up with some long addresses -- we can't guarantee it, but you might want to check out elvis.graceland.tenn.us. But be careful out there; the gray market for domain names is growing.

New HTML version: The hard-working volunteers of the W3C have provided a draft of HTML 4.0 specs which includes additional multimedia and hypertext features, not to mention advanced forms, tables and frames.

Another bite: Apple Computer could lose $70 million in the third quarter, stock analysts are saying. The computer company will report its quarterly results July 16.

At what price: The cable Internet access company @Home will set its IPO price at $10 per share, or higher, Interactive Week reports.
